The magnet for Tech talents and foreign investment

Vietnam’s IT talent is not just abundant; it’s seasoned with real-world experience. From startups to established tech giants, Vietnamese developers are making their mark with practical solutions and innovative approaches.

Denis Brunetti, President of Ericsson, believes the Vietnamese Government is playing an active role in fostering the growth of tech talent through strategic agendas and visionary focus."The government supports STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education at all levels of education and promotes digital upskilling and re-skilling of the existing workforce to ensure a smooth transition to new jobs in the digital age," he emphasized.

Ericsson Vietnam also recently signed an agreement to launch an AI Lab in partnership with RMIT University, residing at its Ho Chi Minh City campus and which supports Vietnam’s ambition of becoming an AI Hub for ASEAN by 2030. This AI Lab initiative paves the way for the potential of future research and development (R&D) activities that we are also exploring in Vietnam (10/2023, vir.com.vn).

Choi Joo Ho, CEO of Samsung Vietnam, shared that the achievements of all Samsung Vietnam facilities are thanks to the staff selected through rigorous recruitment over the past 15 years.

"Through this recruitment round, we hope to find suitable talents who can contribute to improving the quality of human resources for Samsung's remarkable progress as well as for Vietnam's future," he stressed.

Vietnamese government’s efforts to cultivate the tech sector are paying off, attracting substantial investment. A report by the Vietnam National Innovation Center (NIC) reveals nearly $2 billion invested in tech startups over the past two years, making Vietnam the third-largest recipient in Southeast Asia for tech startup deals and capital.

How Vietnam's Education System is Building a Tech Powerhouse

The Vietnamese government and educational institutions have played a pivotal role in nurturing this talent. With a focus on STEM education and technology transfer, Vietnam is producing IT professionals who are not only technically proficient but also adept at adapting to the ever-evolving tech landscape.

An estimated 16.5 thousand of these fresh graduates were instantaneously snappable by employers, fitting seamlessly into roles that are often hard to fill. That’s nearly a 30% success rate, an enviable statistic by any standard.

So, where are these industry-ready tech wizards coming from? The answer lies in a constellation of stellar educational institutions that are the linchpin of Vietnam’s burgeoning tech scene:

  1. Hanoi University of Science and Technology: A pioneer in integrating Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning modules into its curriculum.
  2. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology: Known for its strong focus on Cybersecurity and Data Science, it’s an institution that’s shaping the problem-solvers of tomorrow.
  3. Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City: A hub for Research and Development, often lauded for its extensive partnerships with tech behemoths like Google and Amazon.

And so much more.

Education is the launchpad for Vietnam's IT talent, nurturing a generation of skilled professionals. This, coupled with a surge of investment from international powerhouses like Korea, Singapore, and the US, is fueling the sector's growth and creating a wealth of exciting career opportunities.

However, Vietnam's IT scene faces stiff competition, particularly from India, another major player in the global IT outsourcing market. To truly shine, Vietnam needs to hone its edge by equipping its workforce with the skills needed to thrive on the international stage. This means adapting to the ever-evolving demands of the global IT landscape and ensuring Vietnamese professionals are comfortable working in diverse international teams.

Empowering the Vietnamese Technology Startup Ecosystem

Vietnam’s IT talent has gained recognition for their contribution to complex projects and their ability to work with cutting-edge technologies. This expertise has positioned Vietnam as a credible and authoritative source of IT services on the global stage.

Local experts have said that Vietnam’s deployment of 5G and adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies have the potential to enhance manufacturing and attract investment in smart and advanced manufacturing.

The Southeast Asian country has become an important global manufacturing base for high-tech companies such as Apple, Samsung, LG, and others. Vietnam's abundance of young and educated workers has been a magnet for multinationals and start-ups to invest and expand their presence in the country.

The Vietnamese Government ranked 39th out of 193 countries in terms of artificial intelligence readiness on a 2023 report by the UK-based Oxford Insights. This remarkable progress underscores Vietnam’s commitment to embracing AI technologies to enhance public service delivery.

Vietnam’s total AI readiness score of 54.48 positions it 9th within the East Asia region, although it trails behind some ASEAN peers like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Nevertheless, Vietnam’s score surpasses the East Asia average of 51.41, placing the country 4th among the 9 global regions covered in the report. This achievement reflects Vietnam’s concerted efforts to integrate AI into its socio-economic fabric.

Since then, Vietnam has witnessed widespread deployment of AI technologies across various sectors. Looking ahead to 2030, Vietnam harbors ambitious goals to solidify its position as a regional AI powerhouse.
